Yep, that’s what we did today. We first did a warm-up on Surface Area of pyramids and cones, as well as Volume of prisms. All good examples of benchmarks 51, 52, 55, and 56. We then watched a super-cool clip from YouTube about the volume of a pyramid and cone. The point was made that the volume of a pyramid or cone is:
We looked at some examples, and then went right into spheres. We can find the surface area and volume of a sphere using these two formulas:
There is also a video on YouTube comparing the volume of a sphere with a cylinder. You should check it out. With just a few minutes to spare, we got our two homework assignments: HW: #75 12.5 WS and #76 12.6 WS.
On a super-fantastic sad note, today was our last day of NEW notes. We will still do a few review lessons, but as far as new stuff, nothing else. Please hold back the tears. And make sure you bring a party hat box of Kleenex Monday since we will take our LAST benchmark of the year.
Coming Up:
- Circles Unit Test closes TODAY!!!!! Take it on Moodle.
- BM 50-59 on Monday, with retakes on the second block days (Thurs/Fri) the next two weeks
- Grade Report #4 due Thurs/Fri May 24/25
- Last day for Benchmark Retakes on Thurs. May 31, at lunch
Posting for points question.
We now have all the surface area and volume formulas. Which one is your favorite and which one is your least favorite?
May 18, 2007 at 4:40 pm
my favorite formula is V=B*h my least favorite formula is 1/2(b)(h)
May 18, 2007 at 4:55 pm
my favorite is volume = b times h/3 because its simple and easy. But the TSA is extremely hard to me because theres so many steps its hard to know what your doing.
May 18, 2007 at 5:48 pm
My favorite is all of them. Because they are all easy. All you have to do is remember the formula for each one. And if you do it correctly you already have the volume answered for you.
May 18, 2007 at 6:01 pm
My favorite formular would have to be Volume= B(h) because its the easiest and the simplest to remember!
I don’t really have a least favorite. But I get mixed up on a couple things like the slant height and just regular height.
May 19, 2007 at 7:13 am
My favorite is volume Bxh because it’s the easiest for me.
My least favorite would probably be all spherical ones. they are confusing.
May 19, 2007 at 12:02 pm
I like the V=Bxh/3 its the easiest and there is not to many steps. Hardest for me will have to be TSA=2B+Ph because you have more work to do and all four steps.
May 19, 2007 at 12:55 pm
My favorite formula has to be the volume formula because its easy.I dont really think any of them are very difficult so for the hardest i’d say none of them.
May 19, 2007 at 3:39 pm
My favorite formula is probably the TSA for a sphere, 4 pie r squared. And i’m havinng troble with the TSA= 2B+PH. I just don’t under stand the steps. P.S. that est was tough!

My favorite is finding the volume and surface area of a cirle, and my least favorite is the cones and cylinders.
May 20, 2007 at 9:10 am
My favortie is the volume because it is way easier and if you know how to do the TSA all the work is right there already. My least favorite is the TSA
May 20, 2007 at 12:17 pm
my favorite would be surface area because i know what im doing there.
May 20, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Hw 75 and 76 links dont work ill get them on monday
May 20, 2007 at 4:47 pm
My favorite is the TSA for pyramids and cones because I think its the most interesting. My least favorite is finding the TSA for spheres because I’m not real used to it yet.
May 20, 2007 at 7:38 pm
umm i like all of the volumes but not the tsa’s.. they confuse me and i cant remember them!
May 20, 2007 at 7:53 pm
My favorite is finding the volumes and finding the surface area of a circle because i can remember how to do those. My least favorite is finding the slant hight. I can never remember how to do those.
May 20, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Actually I like them both because they are not that hard to do.
May 20, 2007 at 9:25 pm
The easiest for me is volume =(B)(H). It is pretty simple to remember. I dont really have a least favortie because they are all pretty easy to memorize and know.
May 20, 2007 at 9:29 pm
I like the TSA and Volume formula for a sphere. Those two seem easier to me. The rest are ok.
May 21, 2007 at 7:24 am
I like V=b*h/3 better than the B*H formula.
I totally forgot my kleenex box though. =/
May 21, 2007 at 10:59 am
my favorite is the Volume because its just V=Bh.
its a pretty simple formula so its much easier to understand. It makes things better when everyonce in a while you get an easy assignment after a bunch of hard ones.
May 21, 2007 at 11:36 am
i like volume better because its easier to remember than TSA.
May 21, 2007 at 2:39 pm
the spheres are my favorite because they are very simple to do when you have a calculator. the ones that are the hardest are probably the pyramids and cones im not sure why but it is probably because i didnt have the formula memorized
May 21, 2007 at 5:33 pm
My most favorite formula was the TSA=2B+Ph and my least favorite was the one that we learned last which the formula was something like 1/3BH something like that.
May 21, 2007 at 5:41 pm
ya my favorite would have to be V=bh because it is really easy and you dont have to think….
May 21, 2007 at 6:22 pm
i change my mind its the volume of everything that i like.
May 21, 2007 at 7:33 pm
My favorite would be V=bh because it is really easy
May 21, 2007 at 10:32 pm
My fav. formula according to my calculations is Volume=B*h
May 22, 2007 at 6:44 am
I downloaded the new screen cast last night so that I can study the final on my iPod. I think if you made a video with all of the new benchmark, you might see the scores will go up.

my favorite is BxH.
its very simple.
my least favorites are anything to do with the pyramids.
they confuse the heck out of me.
May 22, 2007 at 7:15 pm
My favorite formula is the volume because it esaier. My least favorite is the TSA because there is more steps involved with it.
May 22, 2007 at 8:17 pm
My favorite formula has to be the volume because it has less steps than the others. My least favorite is the TSA for a pyramid because i cant remember the formula
May 23, 2007 at 4:41 pm
My favorite formula for finding the total surface area is TSA=2B+Ph, for finding the volume it’s V=Bh. My least favorite surface area formula is TSA=B+1/2Pl, my least favorite volume formula is V=4π³/3.
May 23, 2007 at 6:14 pm
I would have to say that my favorites are the volume cuz its simple to remember and its (NOT A LOT OF WORK!!) HAHA
May 23, 2007 at 6:41 pm
My favorite formula is the one for finding the surface area of a 3-D solid. I dont know why, but maybe it’s just because there’s more work involved and I think that it will really help remember all the stuff that we learned from benchmark 5 I think…:)
May 23, 2007 at 7:16 pm
I like the V=B*h/3. i guess its because its easy for me to remember when i need to really remember it.
May 23, 2007 at 7:37 pm
my favorite formula would finding sa=2b+ph
May 23, 2007 at 7:43 pm
i have to say that finding the TSA and volume for a prism is my favorite. and my least favorite would have to be finding the TSA and volume of a hexagon or pyramid.
May 23, 2007 at 7:45 pm
sweet, now if we need to study for anything at school, i can look at the notes on the computer in home room.
May 23, 2007 at 7:46 pm
that last blog post is for a different blog so ignore it. thanks.
May 24, 2007 at 8:28 am
I like the Volume formula because its easier then the TSA formula.
May 24, 2007 at 9:28 am
I like all the volumes their easy.
Prism/cylinder= Bxh, pyramid/Cone= 1/3 Bxh,Sphere= 4pir^3/3
May 24, 2007 at 9:34 am
My favorite formula is most likely Volume = B x H. My least favorite is definetly 4 x pie x radius to the 3rd power divided by 3
May 24, 2007 at 4:41 pm
My favorite formula is the spheres formula which is 4(pi)r2 for total surface area and 4(pi)r3/3 for volume because you didnt have to do the for steps.
My least favorite was the cylinder and pyramid formula which is B+1/2Ph for total surface area and 1/3Bh because you had to use the prism hieght for volume.
May 24, 2007 at 9:20 pm
My favorite surface area formula is for a sphere(4(pie)r2). Its different and a little more complicated than the prism formula(B+Ph). My favorite volume formula is for the prism(b*h). My least favorite surface area formula is for the pyramid(B+1/2Ph). Its give me a headache. And for volume I guess sphere(4(pie)r3).
May 25, 2007 at 9:29 am
My favorite formula is the sphere (4 pie r squared) because it is easy. My least favorite was the pyramid.(B+1/2PL)
May 25, 2007 at 11:12 am
my favorite now that i understand them are by far the spheres because they dont involve much work(4 pi r squared and 4 pi r cubed divided by 3)
my least favorite is B+1/2(ph) for some reason i just get confused with that darn fraction
May 25, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Im soo gald we are done with notes yay!
my favorate formula is TSA= 2B+PH I like that one
May 27, 2007 at 3:56 pm
My favorite ones will have to be the spheres, and the cones. THe whole
~pie-r2
~4-pie-2
that sicks to me the easiest out of all of them.
May 27, 2007 at 3:58 pm
My favorite ones will have to be the spheres, and the cones. THe whole
~pie-r2
~4-pie-2
that sicks to me the easiest out of all of them. You helped me out with alot of those! I guess that is why those one i rember the most out of all of them.
May 27, 2007 at 7:45 pm
My favorite formula is the volume becuse it does not take a rocket scientist to understand it as well as use it.
my least favorite would have to be the TSA of a cone becasue i tend to get the pie thing messed up.
